Breast reduction procedure is undertaken for patients reporting physical symptoms
caused by excessive weight of large breasts. This procedure is also termed as reduction
mammoplasty.
The surgical procedure requires one or two small cuts in the breast to remove some
of the tissue and skin to reshape and reduce breast size. The nipple and aerola
is repositioned to exhibit breast firmness.
This operation is conducted under general anesthesia and the duration is 3 – 5 hours.
Immediately after breast reduction surgery, elastic bandage is applied on the breasts
or special bra (lipomed bra) support is provided for breast support.
Objectives:
- Feel more comfortable – large breasts might cause back & neck pain, posture problems,
skin irritation, etc - Reduce limitations on some physical activities – some limitations in participation
in sports or other related activities are caused by heavy breasts - Change of shape and size of breasts after pregnancy or breast-feeding
- Enhance ones physical appearance – disproportion breast size with body structure
is embarrassing for individuals
