There are two types of cruciate ligaments: anterior (ACL) and posterior (PCL). They connect the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia).
Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is tougher and longer than the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). However they are also ruptured even though the occurrence is far less.
Causes:
PCL injury is caused primarily when an intense impact is felt while the knee is in a bent position.
- Knee striking against the dashboard during a vehicle accident
- Falling on the knee
- Injuries caused in sports and games
Such injuries are associated with mild to extremely severe pain, swelling and knee instability. PCL injury could lead to osteoarthritis over a period of time.
Medical tip
Orthopaedic supports or braces advised against cruciate ligament injury are
Medical supports and braces are prescribed by the doctor if required, and the patients are measured for the correct fit by specialist medical retailers (e.g. surgical appliance dealers): the user’s relevant measurements are taken so that an exact anatomical fit is achieved.
