Course of the disease

Based on the severity of the disease, lymphoedema can be divided into different stages:

  1. Even though the lymphatic vessels might be damaged, they are capable of functioning normally
  2. Temporary swelling in experienced on the limbs after a day’s work. A gentle press results in formation of pit on the affected area.
  3. The swelling caused in this stage doesn’t disappear without expert medical treatment. Moreover the affected area is more prone to infection.
  4. The severity of the disease makes it irreversible wherein the oedema can’t be removed by any means. Other associated complications that might occur are eczema, erysipelas and lymphatic fistulas.
